OUR DIRECTOR

Dr. K. JOTHIMONY, who was raised in a low-income farming family, worked hard and achieved a university rank in his Masters of Chemistry and graduated from IIT Madras with a doctorate in organometallics. He then joined ONGC as an executive scientist and worked in Mumbai, Assam, Rajasthan and Chennai. After years of effort and success in his personal career, the inner desire to improve the socio-economically underprivileged community drove him to form the Vidiyel Trust in 1997 and started his services to community development and charity with his own fund. He voluntarily retired from ONGC in 2003 and worked as a consultant for American Oil and Gas Exploration companies in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Oman, Malaysia, Iran, Brunei, Africa and Myanmar till 2016, which gave him good exposure to socio-economic conditions around the world. Later, he dedicated himself to the socio-economic Development of the underprivileged communities with his own fund and aid from external funding agencies and continues to achieve the planned goals in Southern part of Tamilnadu, India.

ABOUT US

Vidiyel Trust has landed into the Silver Jubilee year, when reviewing the past developmental events, it’s surprising to see the achieved milestones but not content with this situation, we speculate about the action needed to accomplish the unfulfilled results. In the midst of both successes and failures, we have been travelling consistently to work with the women, children and farmers to empower them.


Vidiyel Trust

Vidiyel Trust was formed on 4" November 1997 by a team of dedicated and committed beings envisaging the development of the people in need. The organisation name “Vidiyel” connotes ‘dawn’ in Tamil, the objective is to bring an institutional change for people’s development in the areas of education, health, agriculture and industry. The organisation being led by Dr. K. Jothimony, a Scientist voluntarily retired from ONGC to serve the underprivileged people in Vilathikulam area, has a social vision of uplifting the ‘downtrodden communities and striving to succeed in this task.

MILESTONE

  • Free Coaching Centres & Student Development Centres– AIMS India USA & Self-Funded Program – Tuticorin & Tirunelveli Districts- A Self-funded program by our Founder, covering over 5000 students with 150 teachers.
  • Child Labour Special Schools– Tuticorin & Tirunelveli Districts -Covering over 450 non-school going students.
  • Family Planning Corporation of India– Vidiyel Trust with the support of Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Madurai is involved in creating awareness on RTI/STD/HIV/AIDS, gender issues and family planning methods-2463 households covered, 104 babies,428 adults,187 eligible couples.
  • NRI Home coming projects– Vidiyel Trust with the support of NRI Home Coming Team-US initiated ‘Vilathikulam Initiative Project’ that aimed at promoting community development programmes for sustainable development of rural masses, Construction of Common Borewells thereby providing drinking water supply , Pot in Pot, a poor family’s refrigerator with low cost, introduced in Vilathikulam region with the support of NRI Home Coming Team.
  • Rehabilitation programmes and Skill Training– for Tsunami affected coastal villages in Vilathikulam Taluk with the support of Exnora international – 75 families.
  • Women Self Help Groups and IG Projects- Formation of Self-Help Groups accounting to total of 1900 SHG’s and 15 Federations, covering over 25,000 members with a Savings fund of 2.9 crores and gathered a loan amount of 6.02 crores - Tuticorin & Tirunelveli Districts.
  • India Literacy Project- With the coordination and support of ILP-Bangalore, Vidiyel Trust rolled out sustainable livelihood and education development project in the Periyasamipuram and Vembar coast panchayats, in the post tsunami period – 432 Children covered.
  • Skill Development Trainings – NABARD- Vidiyel Trust with the assistance of NABARD has commenced skill development initiative on Photography and Photo lamination training programme, Beautician training programme, Fish Pickle making process and Mushroom Cultivation - for women,114 women were groomed up as entrepreneurs through this skill development trainings in Tuticorin District.
  • Kilavilathikulam Watershed Project–NABARD - Vidiyel Trust facilitates Kilavilathikulam watershed development project with the financial attribution of NABARD in 1400 hectares that would benefits the rural masses in 7 villages of Kilavilathikulam region. Under Full Implementation Phase (FIP), 100 farm ponds with inlet and outlet pipes, 11 sunken ponds and 12500 R.Mt field bunds have been created for controlling of the overflow of water during rainy seasons.1625 Dry land horticulture seedlings were supplied to women members to plant the seedlings in their backyard and kitchen garden. 2500 seedlings were planted in the field to develop Agro-forest in the watershed area - Kilavilathikulam watershed was selected as best watershed committee for the year 2015 – 16 by NABARD.
  • Sinnur Watershed Project–NABARD/WABAG - Sinnur watershed is a vast plain rain fed area with an average land slope of 1.5% covering 1073.26Hectares of black cotton soil situated at a distance of 4kms from Vilathikulam- 1095 households,4118 people, 114 small farmers,325 marginal farmers, 619 landless labours.
  • Medical Camps– Self-funded, Since-1997, general health, dental and eye camps are conducted for rural communities. Doctors from government and private hospitals are invited to check the persons attending the camps, arranged medical camps in Government schools and referred children with sickness for further treatment.
  • Vilathikulam Farmer Producer Company- Formation of Vilathikulam Farmer Producer Company with 1000 members as shareholders under NABARD scheme- 100% of the share capital i.e. Rs. 10 lakhs have been kept under FD as an investment of the company. Rs.37.87 lakhs worth of chillies, Coriander, Maize sold after procuring from our Farmers interest groups .Facilitated to avail KCC loan to 200 members to the tune of Rs. 1 crore from TMB, Vilathikulam.
  • Bharathiyar Community Center- Formed in Vilathikulam, with 13 acres land donated by Dr.K.Jothimony for Free lease to the community for agricultural activities like creating Agriponds, Green House shed etc., Successful installation and running of Bio-mass Gasifiers – an initiative funded by SEVA International (USA) in 2004, with the support Mr.Ram Krishnan, Mr.Naresh Sharma and Mrs.Madhuri Menon – 1550 rural people,565 children, 24 villages.
  • Kilavilathikulam Climate Proofing Project–NABARD - NABARD has sanctioned Climate proofing project for our organization to implement in a span of 4 years to improve the ecology and environment of Kilavilathikulam watershed area. Activities like Redesigning of existing strucutres like well recharge pits, Seed treatment, Application of Vermicompost, Alternative Livelihood projects, Awarness on Climate Change.
